JAPAN HOUSE is an innovative, worldwide project with three hubs – London, Los Angeles and São Paulo – conceived by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. With the concept of “What Japan Can Bring to the World’s Music Scene,” the complimentary event will feature performances by world-renowned guitarist MIYAVI, along with rhythms by drummer YOYOKA as well as the Asano Taiko drumming group, and the soulful resonance of tsugaru shamisen by Mike Penny. A vibrant “Savor Japan” zone will offer a variety of Japanese street and festival foods, teas, desserts, and Japanese beer and sake for purchase. Walk-ins are welcome as space allows and the gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. According to Masuda, kawaii is “a personal microcosmos of beloved things, undisturbed by anyone else.” This exhibition invites the audience into an adventure of self-expression, unlocking the infinite potential held within each individual.

Project Vision

"The setting, the architecture, it's all there to convey a sense of feeling," Polyakov says. "The idea of peace and emptiness and quiet beauty were very important in 16th-century Japan. These traditions have carried on for hundreds of years, including today." JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles has partnered with Kokoro Care Packages to offer curated gift boxes featuring iconic Japanese snacks to five lucky entrants. This sweepstakes is the cultural destination’s way of expressing thanks to audiences near and far.

A reference guide on the restaurant’s website provides information on the provenance of the evolving ingredients and tableware’s origins, reminding the diner of the thoughtful consideration given to every element of their UKA experience. An accompanying wine and sake pairing is carefully curated by the restaurant’s wine and sake sommeliers, respectively. Japan House has been a multi-level showcase for design, culture, and food sponsored by the Japanese government, with additional locations in London and São Paulo. Years ago, sushi chef Morihiro Onodera used the venue as a launchpad, starting with a sushi pop-up called Inn Ann that he morphed into his namesake Michelin-star omakase restaurant in Atwater Village. More recently, a ramen pop-up last summer served various styles of noodle soups while last winter the space hosted a modern kaiseki from Hiroo Nagahara, a chef who operated the Chairman Truck in San Francisco and Bao Hiroo in LA’s Arts District.

The chef duo’s exquisite approach to interlocally foraged ingredients and accoutrements at UKA shines alongside their careful aging and curing methods of preparing premium fresh seafood that draws out the flavor of the fish, a revered nod to Chef Mitsue’s early training in the fish markets of Japan. Chef Kato’s background in the art of French cuisine also factors into the UKA experience, with distinct nods to the country’s revered culinary cultures and touchpoints found in everything from perfectly paired and delicate sauces to the house made desserts and pastries. However, Uka is a departure from the roving pop-up style operation, settling into something more lasting in order to establish the somewhat difficult-to-access floor into a bona fide dining destination. Expect nine courses, including dashi; savoy egg custard with uni, egg yolk, and fresh wasabi grated tableside; and aged Washugyu ribeye and filet mignon with burdock sauce. Similar to what other kaiseki restaurants like N/Naka and Hayato have brought to Los Angeles, Uka aims for an intricate, beautifully plated display of Japanese ingredients (though California ingredients will also play a role).

In anticipated alignment with its five-year anniversary in Hollywood, JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles announces the debut of UKA, a thoughtfully developed, new dining destination reimagining the acclaimed cultural center’s jewel box space perched high above Hollywood Blvd. The restaurant’s interior didn’t need a lot of adjustment, with its gray colors and natural tones already designed for a sleek, minimalist look. In the evening, the bright lights of Hollywood are on full display thanks to its high-level perch atop Ovation Hollywood (previously known as Hollywood & Highland). Mitsue and Kato will weave between sashimi, prepared dishes, traditional Japanese dishes, and a finale of Western-style tweezer-type desserts that one would expect at two or three Michelin-star establishments in Tokyo or Kyoto. Both Mitsue and Kato come with extensive fine dining backgrounds in Japan and France and were most recently the private chefs for the Japanese ambassador to the U.N.

Kaiseki in its highest forms is celebrated across Japan with detailed, seasonal tasting menus based on local ingredients, but can be more difficult to see in the U.S. From manga to modern architecture, prototyping to paper culture, the Gallery is dedicated to highlighting the best of Japanese culture. Minimal, refined, and intricate, these creators embrace Japanese aesthetics through a myriad of mediums including art, fashion, gastronomy, technology, textiles, and literature. “It is my hope that by engaging with Japan’s pop culture and the philosophy of kawaii, visitors will be encouraged to reflect on what’s unique about themselves and contemplate how to navigate the social and personal challenges of the future. I would be delighted if exploring these diverse perspectives could become a hint for living into tomorrow,” said Masuda. Located at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles’ restaurant space, home to various restaurant pop-ups since its inception in 2018, UKA’s new permanent space features an intimate dining room and Chef’s counter accommodating up to 30 guests per seating. The 1,187 square foot space, designed by Ryu Kosaka, juxtaposes soft gray hues with warm, natural tones of wood in paneling, tables, and countertops, punctuated throughout by lantern-inspired lighting and bonsai tree and bamboo accents. Large windows allow for sweeping views from Hollywood to Downtown Los Angeles.
