An Ambitious New Kaiseki Restaurant Arrives in Hollywood This June Eater LA

japan house los angeles

JAPAN HOUSE is an innovative, worldwide project with three hubs – London, Los Angeles and São Paulo – conceived by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. With the concept of “What Japan Can Bring to the World’s Music Scene,” the complimentary event will feature performances by world-renowned guitarist MIYAVI, along with rhythms by drummer YOYOKA as well as the Asano Taiko drumming group, and the soulful resonance of tsugaru shamisen by Mike Penny. A vibrant “Savor Japan” zone will offer a variety of Japanese street and festival foods, teas, desserts, and Japanese beer and sake for purchase. Walk-ins are welcome as space allows and the gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. According to Masuda, kawaii is “a personal microcosmos of beloved things, undisturbed by anyone else.” This exhibition invites the audience into an adventure of self-expression, unlocking the infinite potential held within each individual.

Project Vision

"The setting, the architecture, it's all there to convey a sense of feeling," Polyakov says. "The idea of peace and emptiness and quiet beauty were very important in 16th-century Japan. These traditions have carried on for hundreds of years, including today." JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles has partnered with Kokoro Care Packages to offer curated gift boxes featuring iconic Japanese snacks to five lucky entrants. This sweepstakes is the cultural destination’s way of expressing thanks to audiences near and far.

Japan House Los Angeles Introduces “UKA” Signature Restaurant in Hollywood

A reference guide on the restaurant’s website provides information on the provenance of the evolving ingredients and tableware’s origins, reminding the diner of the thoughtful consideration given to every element of their UKA experience. An accompanying wine and sake pairing is carefully curated by the restaurant’s wine and sake sommeliers, respectively. Japan House has been a multi-level showcase for design, culture, and food sponsored by the Japanese government, with additional locations in London and São Paulo. Years ago, sushi chef Morihiro Onodera used the venue as a launchpad, starting with a sushi pop-up called Inn Ann that he morphed into his namesake Michelin-star omakase restaurant in Atwater Village. More recently, a ramen pop-up last summer served various styles of noodle soups while last winter the space hosted a modern kaiseki from Hiroo Nagahara, a chef who operated the Chairman Truck in San Francisco and Bao Hiroo in LA’s Arts District.

The chef duo’s exquisite approach to interlocally foraged ingredients and accoutrements at UKA shines alongside their careful aging and curing methods of preparing premium fresh seafood that draws out the flavor of the fish, a revered nod to Chef Mitsue’s early training in the fish markets of Japan. Chef Kato’s background in the art of French cuisine also factors into the UKA experience, with distinct nods to the country’s revered culinary cultures and touchpoints found in everything from perfectly paired and delicate sauces to the house made desserts and pastries. However, Uka is a departure from the roving pop-up style operation, settling into something more lasting in order to establish the somewhat difficult-to-access floor into a bona fide dining destination. Expect nine courses, including dashi; savoy egg custard with uni, egg yolk, and fresh wasabi grated tableside; and aged Washugyu ribeye and filet mignon with burdock sauce. Similar to what other kaiseki restaurants like N/Naka and Hayato have brought to Los Angeles, Uka aims for an intricate, beautifully plated display of Japanese ingredients (though California ingredients will also play a role).

In anticipated alignment with its five-year anniversary in Hollywood, JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles announces the debut of UKA, a thoughtfully developed, new dining destination reimagining the acclaimed cultural center’s jewel box space perched high above Hollywood Blvd. The restaurant’s interior didn’t need a lot of adjustment, with its gray colors and natural tones already designed for a sleek, minimalist look. In the evening, the bright lights of Hollywood are on full display thanks to its high-level perch atop Ovation Hollywood (previously known as Hollywood & Highland). Mitsue and Kato will weave between sashimi, prepared dishes, traditional Japanese dishes, and a finale of Western-style tweezer-type desserts that one would expect at two or three Michelin-star establishments in Tokyo or Kyoto. Both Mitsue and Kato come with extensive fine dining backgrounds in Japan and France and were most recently the private chefs for the Japanese ambassador to the U.N.

Kaiseki in its highest forms is celebrated across Japan with detailed, seasonal tasting menus based on local ingredients, but can be more difficult to see in the U.S. From manga to modern architecture, prototyping to paper culture, the Gallery is dedicated to highlighting the best of Japanese culture. Minimal, refined, and intricate, these creators embrace Japanese aesthetics through a myriad of mediums including art, fashion, gastronomy, technology, textiles, and literature. “It is my hope that by engaging with Japan’s pop culture and the philosophy of kawaii, visitors will be encouraged to reflect on what’s unique about themselves and contemplate how to navigate the social and personal challenges of the future. I would be delighted if exploring these diverse perspectives could become a hint for living into tomorrow,” said Masuda. Located at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles’ restaurant space, home to various restaurant pop-ups since its inception in 2018, UKA’s new permanent space features an intimate dining room and Chef’s counter accommodating up to 30 guests per seating. The 1,187 square foot space, designed by Ryu Kosaka, juxtaposes soft gray hues with warm, natural tones of wood in paneling, tables, and countertops, punctuated throughout by lantern-inspired lighting and bonsai tree and bamboo accents. Large windows allow for sweeping views from Hollywood to Downtown Los Angeles.

Highlights include Masuda’s “Kawaii Timeline” (created in collaboration with Kyoto University of the Arts) depicting kawaii culture’s historical roots from post-war media and shōjo manga (comic books for girls) to the 1990s where it evolved into a global phenomenon rooted in Tokyo’s Harajuku district. An immersive room installation, “Colorful Rebellion -Seventh Nightmare-” envelops guests in the colors and aesthetic of kawaii. Multiple pieces foster discovery and engagement, such as “Digital Tribe World Map” and “Sense Share Bear” (an interactive VR work) both inspired by the desire for the global kawaii network to connect with one another during the COVID-19 pandemic. With a built-in screen and projector, audio system, and complimentary WiFi, the Salon is a versatile space that can accommodate various layouts. The room also features a fully equipped demonstration kitchen that can be used for a culinary workshop or interactive chef’s station. Designed by award- winning interior designer, Ryu Kosaka, the Salon combines a tranquil modern space with multi-purpose functionality that can host a wide range of programs.

Past Events

At UKA, the kaiseki small plates tradition comes to life not only via the considered, interlocal menu but through the experience itself, conveying a delicate and memorable approach to quality, inspiration, and flavor, and engaging all of the senses along the way. It’s an homage to the beauty of Japanese culinary culture and its many facets and a voyage through its timeless customs. The name "UKA" was inspired by "Ukanomitama-no-Kami," the god of grain and fertility, who has been worshipped in Japan since ancient times. Split between multiple levels of the Hollywood & Highland complex, Japan House's L.A. For the past five years, the towering space on the fifth floor of Japan House in Hollywood has hosted pop-ups and special dinners highlighting Japanese cuisine here in Los Angeles. Now the restaurant will permanently become a kaiseki destination called Uka under the direction of celebrated chefs Yoshitaka Mitsue and Shingo Kato, who will occupy the 30-seat restaurant and tasting counter with one of the highest-end expressions of Japanese cuisine in town in early June 2023. With a nine-course kaiseki priced at around $300 per person (before tip and tax), with available wine and sake pairings at $120 per person, Uka is poised to become the most rarefied Japanese food experience in Hollywood, certainly aiming for Michelin recognition in the coming months and years. “Whether it’s Pokémon meeting Japanese craft, the art of the ramen bowl, contemporary Japanese graphic art, classic and contemporary films, gastronomy, or manga, our goal is to provide an immersive cultural experience that intrigues the five senses. It has been an honor and privilege to be a part of this global initiative to showcase the many diverse facets of Japanese culture for the past five years,” says Yuko Kaifu, president of JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles. The colorful exhibition will be on display through Nov. 3 and is the first to include multiple Masuda artworks unravelling kawaii concepts while introducing his personal story of sharing kawaii with the world.

First look at World Voyager, the stylish new expedition cruise ship from Atlas Ocean Voyages

cruise ship voyage

For your other bodily needs, The Tune Up offers medispa treatments, manicures and pedicures by the pool on Deck 15. If you want to feel like a rockstar, you can rent one of the private cabanas on Deck 16. Each costs $250 for a full day and can be reserved at Sailor Services on Deck 5. Inside, you'll find daybeds for lounging and a drinks cooler prepped with fresh-pressed welcome juices. But the real casual-dining winner is The Pizza Place, churning out oven-fresh pizzas day and night in a light and airy space. I was a fan of the white truffle and egg pizza; the amusingly named "pretty fly for a white pie" also had staunch supporters.

All Food

Instead, you can purchase a Bar Tab in advance, which is onboard credit you can only spend on drinks on the ship and at Virgin's Bimini Beach Club in the Bahamas. Look for booking promotions that include a free Bar Tab of a certain amount or give you bonus money on top of what you prepay. Scarlet Lady offers the usual cruise ship mix of windowless inside cabins, ocean-view rooms with large windows that don't open, cabins with private balconies and large suites.

Perfect day the western way

Virgin Voyages is on a mission to create the world’s most irresistible travel brand. We’re seeking to redefine what you should expect from a holiday at sea and create an Epic Sea Change For All. Meat lovers will enjoy meals in the main dining room and at Deck 7's poolside 7Aft Grill, where meat is seared over Josper coals until smoky. In a coup for Atlas, the beef is from the same butcher as Argentina's famed Don Julio restaurant, ranked number 19 on the 2023 list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants. World Voyager is an intimate ship designed for what Atlas Ocean Voyages likes to call "expedition yachting" in some of the most remote pockets of the globe. Like sister ice-class ships World Traveller and World Navigator, this ship has state-of-the-art sonar that allows it to travel deep into polar regions and Zodiac inflatable boats on board for exploring off the ship.

Brilliant Lady

World Voyager, the third ship for fast-growing newcomer Atlas Ocean Voyages, was put through its paces during a tempest of wind and waves on its recent nine-day maiden voyage to Antarctica. The first Virgin Voyages sailings to Australia and New Zealand on the line's new Resilient Lady will begin this winter. After its initial summer cruising in the Mediterranean, the vessel will reposition to Australia in December for a series of 11 sailings ranging from five to 14 nights.

It's the kind of sustainable dining that is on trend with luxury travelers wanting to tread more lightly. From my room, I had a front-row seat to Antarctica's larger-than-life natural drama. Window down, I watched petrels coast the Drake Passage, the roar and tang of the sea outside delivered to me in 3D to counteract the pitching swell. I saw whales, cartwheeling penguins and an iceberg bigger than an apartment block.

Best dining. Best nightlife. And counting.

"Dual Reality," the Romeo-and-Juliet-themed show, was the first cruise-ship acrobatic performance I've seen that had a compelling plot; so many cruise lines throw dancers on hoops or silks in the air simply because they can. The way the staging and performer interaction engaged the audience was original and brilliant. "I loved my experience with Virgin Voyages. I have previously cruised with many other cruise lines. This cruise had the best entertainment and food." "The best vacation I have ever had. The adults only experience immediately elevates any cruise experience. The fine dining and exceptional service there is truly no better way to vacation." All the scheduled between March 26-August 7th (a total of 29) departures were canceled. In mid-May 2020 were canceled 15 additional departures (through October 15).

You will certainly have many opportunities to spend your Bar Tab on board, whether that's wine with dinner, a morning latte or a cocktail at On the Rocks while you listen to live music. Drinking is a key component of Scarlet Lady's nightlife, but as far as I saw, most people embraced the fun but drank responsibly. The Wake also serves brunch and lunch, but I wouldn't recommend it for breakfast. The menu is tiny and fancy, mostly variants of eggs Benedict, a decadent brioche French toast, steak and eggs and a vegan dish. The waiter came around with a tray of off-menu pastries halfway through our meal, rather than when he served our coffee and tea.

Virgin also signed long-term agreements with three providers of waste-based sustainable fuels (Argent Energy, GoodFuels, Twelve) to supply the fleet's bunker fuels. In September, Nirmal Saverimuttu succeeded Michael McAlpin as the company's President and CEO. Along with the new appointment was announced a capital raise of USD 550 million (~EUR 512M/~GBP 440M) with funds managed by Ares Management's Private Equity Group. As of 2023, Ares had ~US$49,2 billion of AUM/assets under management.

The Dock and The Dock House are twin restaurants rocking the Mediterranean resort vibe. The Dock House is an indoor lounge where you and your sweetie can sip cocktails flavored with figs and anise while nibbling on mezze, like beet hummus and watermelon and feta salad, and pretending you're in Ibiza. Razzle Dazzle is a vegetarian-forward restaurant (with several, no-longer-secret meat entrees) open for brunch and dinner.

Toast yourself with a glass of bubbly while you dine like a king on clam chowder, roasted bone marrow, filet mignon and lamp chops. Seafood lovers should splurge on the extra-fee towers of lobster, oysters, shrimp, clams, mussels and crab. You'll want to make your dinner reservations as soon as you get on board.

But let’s be clear, being an adult means you vacation however you want, whenever you want. So if being in bed by 7 pm is your idea of the perfect evening, we encourage that. What to know before you sail on Carnival Jubilee

Super casual items such as cutoff jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, T-shirts and gym shorts are supposedly not permitted, but I saw plenty of them in the dining rooms during dinnertime on Carnival Jubilee. Carnival Jubilee has self-service pressing rooms on decks 4, 5, 9, 14 and 15 with ironing boards and irons that are free to use. Instead, passengers can send out their clothing for washing, pressing and dry-cleaning for a per-item fee.

Visa Requirements

Each country has its own visa policies and requirements, and it’s essential to determine if you need a visa based on your nationality and the ports of call on your Carnival cruise itinerary. Embarking on a Carnival cruise is an exciting adventure filled with relaxation, adventure, and exploration. But before you set sail, it’s important to make sure you have all the necessary documents in order. This will ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey from start to finish.

Carnival may provide assistance with obtaining visas for certain countries, but it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure that you have all the necessary documentation for travel. Unless the person clearing you says no and declines to board you, then you have a problem. Even if the port personal is wrong that doesn't help when the ship sails without you.

Ear-piercing shrieks reverberated throughout the space, which was also blocked off to passengers trying to pass through. Even on port days, when most passengers are ashore, the public areas are filled with loud music that makes it hard to find a quiet escape. After all, Carnival vessels are known as the Fun Ships, but some of it seems unnecessary. My cabin had some of the best soundproofing I've experienced on a new ship in a long time — I had balcony accommodations near an elevator bank and heard nothing when I was in my room. However, a couple of passengers told me they could hear noise from Bolt in their balcony cabin on Deck 15. Plus, the space is a bit of a throwback to the days when interior designer and architect Joe Farcus was responsible for Carnival's ship decor.

Accepted Forms of Identification

It is your responsibility to updateCarnival with any changes to your flight schedule to ensure you are met by the transportationcompany. Should guests wish to consume their wine or champagne in themain dining room, specialty restaurant or bar, a $15.00 USD corkage fee, per750-ml bottle, will be charged. A corkage fee is a charge that is assessed, attime of service, for every bottle that is served and not bought on thepremises.

It will be returned upon completion of the immigration inspection at the time of debarkation. The best you will ever see is a certified copy which you get by ordering through VitalChek or a similar service. Are we talking a photocopy made on a copier, or an official stamped copy from an office of vital statistics (as opposed to the one issued at birth). It sounds like the cruise line is talking official copy as they refer you to how to obtain one.

I would hate for someone to think a photocopy is okay if it’s not. I'm sorry but to many times when the rules are crystal clear have I seen them not followed. You want to travel with a copy of a birth certificate great go for it, I would never risk the downside of that choice. Real ID-compliant cards will have a star on the upper top portion of the card.

Traveling on a Carnival cruise ship can be a fun and exciting experience, but it’s important to make sure you have all the necessary documents before you embark on your journey. If the minor is traveling with only one parent or legal guardian, the parent or legal guardian must provide a notarized letter from the absent parent or legal guardian stating that the minor has permission to travel. The letter should include the name of the absent parent or legal guardian, their relationship to the minor, and the dates of the trip. It is important that the name on the reservation matches the name on the guest’s identification documents. It is also important to ensure that the identification documents are not expired and are in good condition.

Passengers who wish to avoid dressing up can enjoy dinner in any of the casual eateries aboard. During the evenings, the official dress code is pretty laid-back. Most nights are designated "cruise casual," which means just that — khakis or jeans, polo shirts, sundresses and the like.

Carnival Cruise Line shares big advice on not ruining your cruise - TheStreet

Carnival Cruise Line shares big advice on not ruining your cruise.

If you don’t have a valid passport and you plan to cruise, you can still take a vacation, but you will need to make sure you have the proper identification and travel documents before you embark. Carnival Cruise Line welcomes guests of all ages, including minors. However, there are specific requirements and documents that minors need to have to cruise on Carnival. Having proper identification not only ensures that the guest will be able to board the ship, but it also helps with re-entry into the United States or other countries. It is recommended that guests keep their identification documents in a safe and secure location while on board.

Once your Online Check-in is complete, you'll be able to print your boarding pass, luggage tags and even additional documents from home, to save you time when boarding. If you plan on using your driver’s license and birth certificate as proof of identity and citizenship, it’s crucial that both documents match the name on your reservation. Guests under the age of 16 may use a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship in place of a photo ID. However, it is recommended that all guests have a photo ID for ease of travel. Carnival requires all passengers to provide proof of citizenship before boarding the ship. This is to ensure compliance with international travel regulations and to prevent any issues that may arise during the cruise.

(Children younger than 2 are exempt from gratuities.) An 18% gratuity is also added to bar and cafe bills, spa treatments and the cover charge of the Chef's Table. On my sailing, I stayed in a balcony cabin, which was elegantly decorated in neutrals with blue accents. I appreciated touches like ample vanity mirror lighting, adjustable shelving in the closets and a surplus of USB outlets throughout the room, including near the vanity and beside the bed. It was completely different — different color, different taste and different presentation — from what I received when I ordered the same drink on a sailing two months prior. However, the old ingredients were listed on the menu, meaning passengers weren't getting what they thought they ordered.
